Sixteen talented singing groups with singers aged from eight to 80 years old will compete to be in with a chance of securing the prestigious title ‘National Choir of the Year 2014’ – can they follow in the footsteps of reigning champions, Glasgow’s own Les Sirenes?

Choir of the Year  is the largest and most celebrated competition of its kind in the UK, attracting groups from as far afield as Aberdeen and the Channel Islands. Auditions are held at venues across the UK with only the very best choirs making it through to the next round, the Category Finals, which will take place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on Sunday 19 October. After that, just six choirs will make it through to the Grand Final at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall on Sunday 7 December – with over 150 entrants this year, competition is fierce and the standard of singing higher than ever before. The Grand Final will be broadcast by the BBC in the run up to Christmas.

Big Big Sing – Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme
Choir of the Year is joining forces with Big Big Sing - a UK-wide celebration of singing - to mark the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. Members of the public can join in workshops with an inspirational choirmaster who will get everyone singing Commonwealth style with brilliant sounds from South Africa, the Caribbean and more. Everyone is welcome – no singing experience is required and participants don’t need to read music – just come along, join in and sing up.

Big Big Sing workshops will take place from 10.00-11.30 and 14.30-16.00 and tickets cost just £5. Participants can attend a Big Big Sing workshop in the morning and go to the Choir of the Year Audition for FREE in the afternoon or vice versa.

James Grossmith, Choir of the Year judge said:
‘I am really looking forward to judging the Glasgow auditions. There is such a range of choirs performing and I can’t wait to hear what they each have to offer. The Glasgow audition round has historically been very strong, so I’m confident of seeing some future finalists! That said, the great thing about Choir of the Year is its focus on celebration as well as competition: to see so many singers come together in one place, united by their love for singing, is a huge privilege and one I’m glad to be sharing next month.’

Svend Brown, Director of Big Big Sing, said:
‘At Big Big Sing our aim is to get as many people as possible singing and enjoying the health and wellbeing benefits of singing in 2014. The Big Big Sing workshops at the National Choir of the Year auditions are a fantastic way for us to connect with talented choirs and lots of people who enjoy singing or want to give it a try.’

About the National Choir of the Year  (www.choiroftheyear.com)

Choir of the Year is the UK’s national amateur group singing competition and the most prestigious event of its kind – winning the competition is the ultimate achievement for any UK choir.

Since 1984 more than 130,000 singers of all ages have taken part in this biennial festival of singing, performing in a vast array of styles including pop, gospel, barbershop, classical and world music. Choirs perform to a live audience and have expert judges provide live feedback and written guidance notes following their performance.

The National Choir of the Year is more than a competition and helps choirs to become the best they can, providing the opportunity for singers of all ages and backgrounds to meet and exchange ideas. It raises the aspirations of thousands of singers by promoting teamwork, dedication and a passion for singing.

The National Choir of the Year is supported by the Peter Sowerby Foundation and by the National Lottery through Arts Council England.
